Message from an OG Cloud Chaser: Battery Safety

This industry has grown and changed. With all the new exciting products being released faster than the latest smartphone, one side of this industry that hasn’t changed much from the hardcore hobbyists day when we were modifying flashlights and mint cans into cloud competition ready devices, the simple 18650 battery. This is the most common form of cell used in the vapor industry. Other notable cells include 26650 and 20700. It is important to remember that unlike humans, not all batteries are created equal.

Make sure your batteries are properly insulated before installation. I highly recommend using an open-air charger as opposed to charging your batteries directly inside your device. Take the additional second to turn your battery making sure both the positive and negative terminals are free of dents and debris, as well inspect the outer casing “wrap” of your battery to ensure that the wrap is free from any tears, rips, scratches or holes. A tiny hole in a wrap can potentially lead you to have a very bad day. Wraps are very easy to change yourself if you have a device that is particularly rough on the insulating wrap or if your cells take an unfortunate tumble onto the sidewalk.

Batteries should be cycled out regularly and replaced with new cells every six to nine months of regular use or as needed if the cell begins to arc or oxidize at the positive or negative terminals. It is very important to mention even if your battery is in perfect working order, “accidents” happen. The most common battery failure accident is caused by user error, either a cell that is past prime or something as simple as tossing a loose cell into your pocket with keys or change can cause issues. Remember to always store your batteries in a proper case or battery storage unit.
